Week 5ish of My New Life....

Aug 25, 2010 -- 8:28pm

Many of you have been wondering where I am relative to my Juno Beach Fitness training regimen. Just to recall your memory bank, I am training for a mini-marathon in December, in which no one fathoms me being able to run 5.5 miles.

Unfortunately, I've had no updates because a wonderful case of bronchitis placed me on the disabled list for the past three weeks. That, and subsequent orders from Dr. Mike Goldstein.

So on Tuesday, I returned to Juno Beach Fitness where I've been absent for three weeks. And was greeted with not one, not two, but three absolute stares of death. Those coming from my trainer David, and Kevin and Kim, the owners of Juno Beach Fitness. I told you that they will stay on you and make you feel guilty for missing a couple of workout days---just imagine three weeks(of course in a good way). Next time, it's going to take a trip to the ER room to keep me away from the workout.

But here's the advice for everyone out there: Even if something out of your control inhibits your ability to work out, you can still achieve your goal of losing weight. David's goal for me was to plummet from 180 pounds to 170 pounds. So I step on that scale Tuesday, and weigh in at 169 pounds!!! That's what five weeks of following Juno Beach Fitness's mealplan will do for you! And here's a little secret.....I snuck in a couple of extra cheat meals. Gotta satisfy some of our wonderful food partners(Park Avenue BBQ/Duffy's/Rooney's All-In to name a few).

We'll keep you posted on the weight loss and the running---and look for video of me struggling in action very soon!

True Miami Dolphins Statements....

Aug 16, 2010 -- 12:02pm

At least true, according to this Dolphins fan's perspective:

-Here's what you should evaluate in preseason games: Rookies and players who have something to prove, and players coming off of an injury. It's OK to take copious notes based off of a rookie's performance--it's their first chance seeing someone at the next level partake in live action. Same with players who have left a lot to be desired, but receive copious adulation from their coaches through Week 1 of training camp.

-Here what you shouldn't put too much stock in preseason games: The performance of veterans and proven players. Jason Taylor isn't going to approach the first preseason opener along the same lines as Koa Misi. That's just a fact. And I wouldn't get too concerned if you saw Jake Long surrender a sack(he didn't), he's 2 for 2 in Pro Bowl appearances.

-Here's what you should put ZERO stock in preseason games: The score and the play calling. Coaches are not coaching to win, they are coaching to assess how players perform in select situations. And they would rather lose a game with a vanilla gameplan versus win and divulging the next level of the wildcat, or Mike Nolan's so-called exotic blitzes.

So piggybacking off of those rules, here's what I take out of Dolphins camp so far:

-Do not be concerned over Brandon Marshall. Not only has he reeled in 300 balls in three seasons(which he said respectfully, contrary to reports that indicated otherwise), but in his 3 career preseason openers, Marshall has NINE receiving yards. NINE.

-I think Chad Henne will be better than he showed in the sog Saturday night. I don't know whether he'll be great.

-Most people think Tyler Thigpen playing 2 and a half quarters translates into the end of the Pat White era. I disagree. I think it either means that White will get a ton of reps this Saturday, or that the Fins were showcasing Thigpen for a trade.

-I say this over and over again about Pat White....he's a WILDCAT QB. And he will make this team as a WILDCAT QB. That's why he was drafted in the second round. You can't compare him to Pennington and Thigpen. You have to compare him to whether he's a more effective option than Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams at running the wildcat. Especially when Ronnie is a free agent at year's end.

-Which brings me to this....I think this is Ronnie's last year in aqua and orange. And I think Lex Hilliard in two years will be the feature back on the Dolphins.

-Koa Misi and Cameron Wake are getting too much credit from Saturday. Sure, they won some one-on-one matchups. But almost getting to the QB against one of the five worst teams in the NFL isn't much to boast about.

-I do think Jared Odrick is already the best D-End on the Fins. And Marques Douglas and Charles Grant may be 2 and 3. I never understand the buzz surrounding Kendall Langford.

-Paul Soliai was the best NT. Is that Soliai taking a giant step forward, or was Randy Starks lack of penetration a concern? Starks falls in between the little stock/lot of stock category because he's playing his first full year at a new position.

-Channing Crowder is lighting up people. Good to see.

-Vontae Davis and Sean Smith showed a lot of high risk, high reward out there. Nolan Carroll is a good cover corner. Nate Ness had his moments. More support to my theory that Will Allen isn't on this team come Week 1.

Hazing That Should Happen

Aug 07, 2010 -- 6:55pm

I'm not a big fan of rookie hazing. Well, not that I'm steadfast against it--at least the innocous kind like carrying pads and singing in front of the veterans. I just applaud the Dez Bryant's of the world that speak up against it because it finally allows us to look at the ridiculous notion that it improves team chemistry and ask: Really? Really?

The dangerous stuff like what happened at Saints camp under Mike Ditka where rookies had to run through a gauntlet while getting punched and striken----that's beyond idiotic.

But this picture of Tim Tebow proves that some hazing SHOULD still occur....Welcome to the NFL, Timmy T!(picture courtesy of Lendale White's twitter account)

Week 2 of My New Life.....

Aug 01, 2010 -- 4:00pm

Since I'm about to go do some cardio work, I may as well refresh you on Week 2 of Juno Beach Fitness helping giving me a new life:

-As of yesterday, I weighed 174 pounds. That's 60 percent towards David the Jet fan's(also David the Trainer) goal of getting me at 170 pounds over the first four weeks. That puts me at pace for 168 pounds, which means I'm ahead of schedule, right??

-I also had a little bit of a setback this week....thanks to my throat and sinuses. I've been fighting a cold for much of the weekend, which knocked me out of Friday's training session with Jill(who insists that I'm just scared of her---I'm not going to lie, I definitely am!), and boot camp on Saturday. So the push to finish modified boot camp will have to wait another week. I lack toughness--there's no question about that!

-Then there is the issue of the "cheat meal." As part of my diet, I'm supposed to pick one period of time during the week where I can eat whatever I want. It seems like Saturday night will be that time. That meant total freedom at the Dave Matthews Band concert on Saturday night: A few beers, a ham and cheese sub I brought in, pretzels, my friend Larry's lemon cake.....but wait, isn't that kind of mild for a cheat meal?? I was skeptical of whether the "cheat meal" would totally ruin my new eating habits, but I'm finding it easy to go back on the plan on Sunday---so hopefully this carries over.

-Oh yeah, and the running part----well I ran/walked about a mile and a half on the treadmill.....let's not focus on that part until we absolutely have to!

Hopefully, I'll be back to intense training this week after a couple of days off. But as my GKB "teammate" Jordan said on the show, if Juno Beach Fitness can fix me, they should work on Albert Haynesworth next!

Week 1 of My New Life

Jul 25, 2010 -- 8:45pm
Note: This is the first of a series of blogs dedicated towards me training with the great people at Juno Beach Fitness to run 5.5 miles on December 5.

I could talk about how I’ve never eaten healthy for a sustained period of time until now. I could talk about how I get tired over running 5 minutes on the treadmill, let alone 5 miles. But I think my description of Saturday’s boot camp will depict where I am and where I need to be in 18 weeks!

Saturday 7:30 AM, Juno Beach Fitness.

Warm-Up: 15 minutes walking on the treadmill. OK, this isn’t exactly the “most grueling boot camp in South Florida,” as my trainer/avid ESPN 760 fan David said it would be.

Listening Time: Kelly and David, running the boot camp, go over the agenda. We each partner up with one other person and do 4 sets of 10 different exercises. 30 seconds per set, then a 15 second rest period. A lot of work, but seems doable.

Exercise 1: Apparently me and my partner, Kathleen get the easy one first. We lean back against a wall like we are sitting in a chair and hold it for 30 seconds. Yeah easy, except for the fact that my calves felt like butter knives after Set 2.

Exercise 2: Jump on and off a 2-3 foot high stepper. I’m starting to get tired already. After exercise 2!

Exercise 3: Slamming down a 10 pound ball over my head for 30 seconds four times. Apparently I looked like such a wuss that David came over and told me to imagine the face of a certain person(one of the few people I legitimately dislike) and smash the ball with vigor! No, no names.

Exercise 4: Modification time number one. Instead of doing a triple jump, turnaround and jump back, I just jump once and turnaround. Yep, now we’re feeling boot camp!

Exercise 5: Everything is a blur now....let’s just skip to number 6.

Exercise 6: Hey, I’ve never been happier to welcome back the treadmill. Except now it’s on a 15 incline. But at this point, I get about an 8 incline. Yep buying time.

Exercise 7: We’re supposed to jump over a stepper, front and back. I’m jumping along the side at about half-speed. God I feel nauseous!

Exercise 8: Honestly, I don’t remember. I just wanted to get through it. Somehow, I did. Sort of.

Exercise 9: We’re supposed to grab a bungee cord, pull it out and do arm raises. I grab the bungee cord and then.....POW, done for the count!

I quit my first boot camp with two exercises to go. Now I would be more ashamed of that if it weren’t for everyone at Juno Beach, who was unbelievably supportive. Seriously, David apparently was betting on my exit after Exercise 5. But now we have a mission for Week 2, finish boot camp!

And one last thing. Here is my “Before” picture taken on Tuesday. I’m supposed to go from 180 pounds to 170 pounds in four weeks. I want you all to help me get there!
