Chris Paul and New Orleans - NOT

Jul 27, 2010 -- 11:52pm

Does anyone believe Chris Paul suddenly did a 180 and sees himself spending his career in New Orleans after a heart to heart with the mega trio of Monty Williams – Dell Demps – and Hugh Weber?  I sure don’t.  Maybe I’m just extra-cynical lately, but I never thought Tiger and his wife would truly try to patch things up, I tend to believe the rumors about Lebron’s mom and I definitely do not think that  the Hornets or Chris Paul think they’ll be together long-term and possibly even shorter than that.  But by saying that he loves the team and that they are trying to win, it will make him a lot easier to trade if players coming in think it’s for a team trying to build the right way and with good management.  I still think he’ll be traded by Feb with the likely landing stops in Orlando, New York or still possibly Boston if they falter early.

Williams Sister are the Top Sports Story of our lifetime!

Jul 05, 2010 -- 8:17pm

I spent the whole weekend goading people into arguing with me about the Williams sisters.  My contention – they are the most underappreciated sports story of my generation and likely lifetime.  With Serena winning at Wimbledon this year, she now has 13 Grand Slams, putting her at 6th all-time, which on its own is something at which to be marveled.  Add in that Venus has 5 Wimbledons and 7 Grand Slams overall.  The duo has now combined for 20 Grand Slams singles titles (and 12 Grand Slams as a doubles duo, including 4 consecutive Grand Slams until they lost at Wimbledon and are currently the #1 ranked doubles-duo in the world).

It irks me that these 2 aren’t truly embraced by mainstream America, or even the entire tennis community?  Why aren’t they as beloved as they deserve to be?  Aside from crying racism, here is the list of reasons I can come up with and the argument against:

- not playing in the Federation Cup at times – they have many times, as well as the Olympics

- miss too many tournaments because of injuries – tennis takes a physical toll on the body and few have had the longevity of these two

- not playing hard against each other in big matches – it’s not that they don’t play hard, they are just so close that they feel as bad for the sister that’s losing as excited as they’d are for themselves about winning.  They don’t play well because they aren’t totally focused!

- having their focus on off the court endeavors – show me a professional athlete that isn’t involved in something off the field

- being Jehovah’s Witness – sorry they don’t celebrate Christmas or Chanukah

- their father Richard alienated many at the start of their careers – outdated and irrelevant argument for 10 years

C’mon – this isn’t 2 childhood friends or little league teammates – this is sisters!  2 sisters, who once played each other in 4 consecutive Grand Slam finals!  I don’t remember Michael Jordan taking on his brother year after year, or Tiger Woods routinely getting paired with his brother on Sundays, or Lance and Larry Armstrong going neck and neck to the finish in the Tour de France (I don’t know if any of them actually have brothers, but you get my point)   What these 2 sisters have accomplished on an international level and what they had to overcome to get there – can you give me a better story?

The World's Reaction to Landon Donovan's Game Winning Goal vs. Algeria

Jun 27, 2010 -- 12:33am

probably would have been better to post this BEFORE we lost to Ghana, but just pretend that game never happened and enjoy this video of USA fans from all over rejoicing after Landon Donovan's game-winner vs. Algeria.  This was forwarded to me from my boy and huge soccer fan PGA Tim.

Sweep the Leg Johnny!

Jun 11, 2010 -- 9:16am

Will Smith’s son Jaden is cute and all, but this leads to my constant debate of is Hollywood about talent or opportunity?  If there was an open tryout, would this kid have been selected for the part?  I saw his interview on the Today Show and when asked if he watched the original Karate Kid, his answer was basically “yes, because I had to” and then brilliantly added “I’ve met Ralph Macchio and his son is named Danny so that’s cool.”  Seems really appreciative of his opportunity….Also, despite the porn-stache Jackie Chan doesn’t look like Mr. Miyagi, so my main reason for seeing this would be to see if he shaves it at any time during.  No one likes a sequel or remake more than me, but just not feeling this one. (unless of course you can guarantee that a terrible Peter Cetera song will be a part of this movie and thus be stuck in my head for 3-7 years – “after all that we’ve been through, I will make it up to you…” or there’s a cameo by the guy who in the original Karate Kid  said “put him in a body bag Johnny”)

Lebron James.....by law we all must weigh in

May 17, 2010 -- 1:03am

I don’t see Lebron in Chicago and it’s not because of the on court product - Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose are actually a perfect fit for him.  And this idea seems to be gaining additional steam, more so it seems because all of the other non-Cavs options are worse.  The problem I is see with Chicago is the specter of Jordan’s 6 Championships and Lebron being almost too aware of them.  Lebron is insecure and wants to be loved, so when and if he were to win 1, the notion that people would say “great, but michael had 6” wouldn’t be something mentally at this point he’d deal with well.  This ties in to the real reason why he hasn’t won yet – not because of the Cavs sub-par supporting cast or coaching, but because how he’s perceived (by teammates, media, fans) is still more important to him then actually doing what’s necessary to win.  If you don't agree all I need to bring up is the Boston series - Game 5 and crunch time in the 4th qtr of Game 6.

The best thing Lebron can do is tweet out "just got back from Birmingham, Dr. Andrews says I have 99 problems and an elbow is 1"

Additional note – Antwan Jamison is no longer to me a “good player stuck on a bad team” – his playoff performance exposed him and now makes him an “overrated player, who blew his chance to win and will now bounce from team to team and be traded mostly for salary cap-matching reasons for the final 4 seasons of his career.”

sorry to hate antwan, but i thought you were better than thatView Comments (1)
