ULM 26 FAU 0

Dec 04, 2011 -- 9:03pm

(FAUSports.com)The Florida Atlantic University football team could not send legendary Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger out a winner in his final collegiate career game, losing 26-0 to the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday at the FAU Stadium in Boca Raton.

"It was a joy," said Schnellenberger after the game. "My mindset was like it was for the first game I coached in. I tried to weave the plan for winning that found its origin in winning last week."

Schnellenberger closes out a 52-year coaching career with 158 victories, including 58 wins as the only head football coach in Florida Atlantic history. He led the Owls to a semifinal appearance in the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, guided FAU to the 2007 Sun Belt Conference title, and was on the sidelines as the college posted victories in the New Orleans Bowl and Motor City Bowl during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He had a 6-0 career record in bowl games.

"I am so astonished at the things that have been written or said about me this week," said Schnellenberger, whose collegiate career also featured a national championship at the University of Miami, and stops at the University of Louisville and University of Oklahoma.

The visiting Warhawks opened the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Kolton Browning to Luther Ambrose. The play capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive with 2:04 left in the opening quarter.

ULM took a 12-0 lead with 10:06 left in the first half when Jyruss Edwards scampered 67 yards for a score. Edwards would punch in his second rushing touchdown of the game with a one-yard run shortly before the half. The Warhawks added a fourth-quarter touchdown to round out the scoring.

Individually, senior running back Alfred Morris paced the FAU offense with 72 yards. He leaves as the program's all-time leader in rushing and total touchdowns, along with all-purpose and rushing yards after concluding his career with 3,529 yards.

FAU redshirt junior quarterback Graham Wilbert completed 11 passes for 79 yards on the evening. His main targets were redshirt senior tight end Darian Williams, redshirt sophomore wide out DeAndre Richardson and redshirt freshman wide receiver Marcus Cunningham. Each receiver had two receptions.

Defensively, redshirt sophomore linebacker Randell Johnson led the unit with 15 tackles, including three-and-a-half tackles for loss. Freshman linebacker Andrae Kirk also recorded 10 tackles.

The game closed out the careers of 17 seniors. The group was recognized during a pre-game ceremony at FAU's new on-campus stadium.
