After posting its tentative district assignments for the next two seasons, the FHSAA has released its final districts after hearing appeals from different schools. Only three area schools (Suncoast, Oxbridge Academy and Ft. Pierce Westwood) received new district assignments.
Suncoast, which was initially to play in a district with Key West, won its appeal and will now play in District 15-6A. The Chargers have to move up a class, but get to avoid the 4 1/2 hour drive down to Key West for a road game.
After just one year of football, Oxbridge Academy was set to join District 7-3A for the next two years, but will instead remain an independent. While the move makes sense from a competitive standpoint, the young Oxbridge program is still a ways away from competing with established teams, football fans will be robbed of seeing Oxbridge head coach Doug Socha square off against his old team in American Heritage. As its been documented over the past year, there's no love lost between the two sides.
In the only other change, Ft. Pierce Westwood will move from its district of mainly Space Coast opponents to District 14-6A. The Panthers will have a much easier time traveling for road games as the district is comprised of local programs such as Jensen Beach, Okechobee, Port St. Lucie and South Fork.
